- HTTPS
- DEFINITION (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure
Socket Layer, or HTTP over SSL) is a Web protocol developed by
Netscape and built into its browser that encrypts and decrypts
user page requests as well as the pages that are returned by
the Web server. HTTPS is really just the use of Netscape's Secure
Socket Layer (SSL) as a sublayer under its regular HTTP application
layering. (HTTPS uses port 443 instead of HTTP port 80 in its
interactions with the lower layer, TCP/IP.) SSL uses a 40-bit
key size for the RC4 stream encryption algorithm, which is considered
an adequate degree of encryption for commercial exchange.
-
- Suppose you use a Netscape browser to visit
a Web site to view their online catalog. When you're ready to order,
you will be given a Web page order form with a Uniform Resource Locator
(URL) that starts with https://. When you click "Send," to
send the page back to the catalog retailer, your browser's HTTPS
layer will encrypt it. The acknowledgement you receive from the server
will also travel in encrypted form, arrive with an https:// URL,
and be decrypted for you by your browser's HTTPS sublayer.
-
- HTTPS and SSL support the use of X.509 digital certificates from
the server so that, if necessary, a user can authenticate the
sender. SSL is an open, nonproprietary protocol that Netscape
has proposed as a standard to the World Wide Consortium (W3C).
HTTPS is not to be confused with S-HTTP, a security-enhanced
version of HTTP developed and proposed as a standard by EIT.

- F.T.C. Guidelines governing sales of
gold and gold jewelry in this country state the following:
- *Terms "pure gold" and "solid gold" can
only be used for 24 karat gold.
* Term "gold" can only be used if gold content is 10
K or better.
* Term "gold filled" applies only to items composed of a layer
of gold pressed (not alloyed) onto a base metal where the weight of the gold
comprises at least 1/20th of the total weight of the item. Fineness must
be shown by stamp, e.g. "1/20 12 k G.F." means the gold layer is
12 karat gold and comprises 1/20th of the total weight of the item.
5) Term "rolled gold plate" is the same, but gold comprises less
than 1/20 of total weight; e.g. stamped "1/30 12 k G.P." means
1/30 of the metal weight is from 12 karat gold plate.
*"Gold electroplate" or "gold flash" or "gold washed" mean
a gold coating that is 10 k or better gold at least 0.000007 inches thick.
A variant, "heavy gold electroplate" (H.G.E.P.) is at least 0.0001
inches thick.
- 14k Gold-fill:
- 14k Gold-fill, sometimes written goldfill or goldfilled, is a
layer of gold 10KT or better mechanically bonded under heat and
pressure on one or more surfaces of supporting base material
(usually brass or jeweler's bronze), Then rolled or drawn to
a given thickness or gage.
-
- (Be ware of items offered as simply "Gold-filled" rather
than 14KT Gold-filled or 10 or 12KT Gold-filled when trying
to compare prices!)
-
- The finished product thus has a surface layer of gold of the
appropriate karate, which is very thick compared to gold plate
or the very heaviest electroplated material.
-
- The above standards are the minimum, so you might find jewelry
labeled as 14/20GF or even 14/10GF to denote 1/20 14KT Gold-filled
or 1/10 14KT Gold-filled.
-
- Although gold-filled jewelry items are considered lifetime products
by many, if you wear a ring daily, it will wear down to the core
material, much as you would wear through the your solid 14k product. The
gold layer will not quickly wear off, as it does with gold plated
jewelry. Gold-fill is an extremely long-wearing material.
-
- Rolled Gold Plate:
- This i s made the same way as the Gold-filled material, but with
a lower gold content. The minimum standard is 1/40th the total
weight of the product must be the appropriate karatage gold.
Thus a product marked 14K RGP is 1/40th (2.5%) 14K gold by weight.
- Sterling silver
- Also written 925 is
- Rolled gold
- Term is sometimes confused with goldfill,
but rolled gold is a plating process; see FTC guidelines
above
- Plated
- or Electroplated is created using an electro-chemical processes..
Gold plate or sterling plate.... Rhodium plating is often used...
- Vermeil
- Pronounced "ver-may," this
is sterling silver electroplated over sterling silver.
- Doublet (as in Opal doublet)
- a slice of natural material (in this
instance it would be opal) bonded to a backing of a different
material. The backing material can be anything from acrylics
to natural stones, often black onyx. In the case of boulder
opals, the fire layer of precious opal is often bonded to
a piece of the natural brown stone in which it is found.
- THIN FILM DEPOSITION
- As for Mystic Fire Topaz
- Azotic Coating Technology, Inc, offers the opportunity to create valuable new surfaces with a vast array of properties through vacuum
deposition. Sophisticated treatments, based on knowledge of metallurgy provides the foundation for today's specialized methods.
